Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian award instituted in 1954, is given in recognition of exceptional service, performance of the highest order in any field of human endeavour. Educationist Madan Mohan Malviya and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee are the 44th and 45th distinguished personalities who have been conferred with country's highest civilian award Bharat Ratna. Early this year, Sachin Tendulkar and C N R Rao were given Bharat Ratna. The others who were conferred with Bharat Ratna are: 1) C Rajagopalachari 1954  2) Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan 1954  3) C V Raman 1954

A thief who failed to rob a bank later wrote a letter seeking an apology for his crime. The incident took place in Sector 6 of Noida where an amateur thief came to steal money from a Canara Bank on Sunday night but failed, he then wrote a touching letter to the bank apologising for his crime.

Medical reimbursement of Supreme Court judges exempted from RTI: Delhi HC

Justice Vibhu Bakhru held that the Central Information Commission (CIC) was in error to direct the Supreme Court Registry to provide the information sought, saying "medical records are not liable to be disclosed unless it is shown that the same is in larger public interest".

Satyam case verdict deferred till March 9

A special court Tuesday adjourned the much awaited judgement in the multi-crore rupee Satyam scam till March 9, 2015. The court was expected to pronounce Tuesday the verdict in what is billed as the country's biggest accounting fraud that had left the corporate world stunned in 2009.

Political corruption  is the use of powers by government officials for illegitimate private gain. An illegal act by an officeholder constitutes political corruption only if the act is directly related to their official duties, is done under color of law or involves trading in influence. Forms of corruption vary, but include bribery, extortion, cronyism, nepotism, patronage, graft, and embezzlement. Corruption may facilitate criminal enterprise such as drug trafficking, money laundering, and human trafficking, though is not restricted to these activities.

Saradha scam: What role did the Kolkata top cop play?

After netting and questioning a host of Trinamool Congress Party leaders in connection with the Saradha scam, it is now the turn of Kolkata Police Commissioner Surajit Kar Purkayastha to be questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The allegation: "He along with Madan Mitra were seen together attending various functions organized by the Saradha group".  Further, the names of several bureaucrats and politicians numbering around 22 were named in the Serious Frauds Investigation Office (SFIO) report. The SFIO had also stated that several officials and politicians could not be questioned by them due to lack of cooperation and hence the CBI would have to probe them.

Maha contractor reveals corruption in dam construction, says 22% of dam cost paid as bribe

A Pune-based contractor has revealed how bribes are paid to get dam contracts in the state of Maharashtra. Almost 22 per cent of the project cost is offered as kickbacks in order to get the work done, the contractor in a letter to the Devendra Fadnavis government has revealed. From a lowly clerk to the politicians everyone have their share in the bribe paid by construction companies.

Mumbai, Dec 21: Maharashtra Congress' ongoing membership drive has so far failed to evoke an enthusiastic response from the state cadre of the party, which is still reeling under the defeats faced in Lok Sabha as well as Assembly polls this year. The membership drive ends on December 31 following which the organisational elections will be held.
