Saradha scam: What role did the Kolkata top cop play?

After netting and questioning a host of Trinamool Congress Party leaders in connection with the Saradha scam, it is now the turn of Kolkata Police Commissioner Surajit Kar Purkayastha to be questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The allegation: "He along with Madan Mitra were seen together attending various functions organized by the Saradha group".

Further, the names of several bureaucrats and politicians numbering around 22 were named in the Serious Frauds Investigation Office (SFIO) report. The SFIO had also stated that several officials and politicians could not be questioned by them due to lack of cooperation and hence the CBI would have to probe them.

Kunal Ghosh exposed Kolkata Police Commsioner? It was Trinamool Congress MP Kunal Ghosh who first blew the lid off the Kolkata police commissioner and also Madan Mitra. Based on what Ghosh deposed, the SFIO in its report stated that very high profile personalities were part of the Saradha scam. Chapter IV of the SFIO report dealing with persons liable for abetment and criminal conspiracy states the sharing of the stage by high profile individuals with the Saradha group members gave the public a sense of confidence in the group.
This in turn helped Saradha get investors the SFIO report further states. Kolkata Police Commsioner played vital role in Saradha scam The SFIO report further alleges that the police commissioner had played a vital role in the abetment of the scam. He along with other officers including former top cop Rajat Majumdar  and TMC vice president are alleged to have played an important role in covering up this scam, the report also alleges. Ghosh had said during his deposition that the police commissioner was seen at various events and had allegedly taken kickbacks from the Saradha group.
Further, Ghosh had also provided the investigators with photographic evidence of the police commissioner attending functions organized by the Saradha group. Everyone will be questioned: CBI A CBI officer tells OneIndia that the idea was to instill confidence in the minds of the investors. The Saradha group members had given enough kickbacks to both bureaucrats and politicians in West Bengal to be part of the entire operation. They were told specifically to attend public functions organized by the Saradha group. This was done to show the public that big persons were with them and hence it was safe to invest.
The CBI official also said that they are taking the SFIO report very seriously. There is a recommendation that we probe several other persons. The SFIO had infact expressed helplessness while probing some persons who had deliberately used their clout to block the probe by either not cooperation or refusing to share files. E "Everyone will be questioned no matter how high and mighty he or she may be", the CBI officer also informed.
