Big setback: BJP loses all seven seats in cantonment board polls in Varanasi
At a time when Modi-led BJP is gearing for Delhi Assembly poll, this news will be a big blow to the Saffron party. Reportedly, the BJP has lost all seven seats in the cantonment board elections in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's constituency, Varanasi.
The result of the cantonment board elections where all the seven seats were won by independent candidates, was declared on Monday.
In the election held on Sunday, nearly 15 thousand voters had cast their votes. A Zeenews report says that at least 36 candidates had contested the polls in all seven wards. This setback has come at a time when the BJP is banking on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's magic to register victory in Delhi poll.
With this defeat, the Opposition may get a chance to up the ante saying that Modi has lost all his magic now. Opponents may now allege that people have understood that Modi was only doing marketing and he doesn't have any intention of bringing 'good governance' in his own constituency.
Earlier, Kickstarting BJP's poll campaign for Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi On Saturday wooed voters with a host of promises as he singled out 'anarchist' AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal for attack and asked people to punish him for "wasting" one year. Without naming Kejriwal or his party, Modi said at a rally here that if the AAP leader wants to be an "anarchist" as he has claimed to be, he should go to jungles to join naxals as Delhi cannot have anarchy. Kejriwal had said about a year ago that he is an "anarchist".
